Casino Games at Racetracks Bad Idea, Says Professor

Despite the claims of groups like the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP), gambling industry experts say that adding casino games to racetracks cannot and will not save the failing horse racing industry.

Bill Thompson, a professor of public administration at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, said that adding casino games to current racetracks is a common tactic adopted by those who are trying to save the horse racing venues. “There’s not a single state in the nation where there’s a horse track and they haven’t tried [adding casino games], he said.

However, according to Professor Thompson, horseracing is simply a dying industry, and adding casino games to the sites cannot create more interest in a product that lacks enough market interest to stay above the water. The racetracks, the professor said, are simply not a viable commercial product.

Adding casino games to racetracks does indeed increase the amount of people that frequent the track. However, there is no evidence that the people who come to the site to play casino games will then bet on the horses. Instead, allowing casino games at established racetracks simply gives racetracks a monopoly on casino gambling, thereby diminishing state revenues from gambling.
